Picture of Oystermouth Castle
Castell Ystumllwynarth.. in The Mumbles, Swansea Bay
The Castle is Norman in origin.  The original timber structure was burned and destroyed in 1215 when the forces of Rhys Gryg attacked the area.  The existing stone structure can be traced back to the 13th Century when the De Breos family, who were Lords of Gower during the period, rebuilt following the fire of 1215.  A look at the castle will reveal several styles and subsequent additions to the original building leaving us with the present unique example of one of the most complete medieval fortifications in South Wales
